Second Grade Music

So many changes for our 2nd graders, upper-wing classrooms and lockers are just a few.  During second grade, we will focus on note writing, musical notation, instrument playing, composing and singing.  We begin the year studying "The National Anthem", the story and the lyrics.  They surprise themselves when we start to organize the Star Spangled Banner jigsaw puzzle and how much they know.  Please check out the links under Star Spangled Banner links for more information and video clips.

October:  Over the last 3 weeks, we have learned the song "Autumn Leaves".  Besides singing the song, we also learned sign language.  We made lists of words that describe how leaves moved, made ourselves into leaves and then created a color performance.  Check out the page to the far left labeled "Autumn Leave Video Clips".

November/December:  The holiday singing began on November 1st and the students sound amazing!!!!  I can't wait for you to hear them at our concert on December 14th at 9:30 AM.  We will begin to add moves and let the true joy of the season spill out to the audience soon.  If you can't make it, don't worry, we will record it and place it on the schools webpage/my webpage to share with you and your families.  Look in your child's backpack for the bright red flyer for more information about the concert.
Not only are we singing, we are also learning about Chanukah and Kwannza and the traditions that surround these holidays.  The music is available on the left to practice at home.  You can also check out "The Monster Mash" video clips we created at the end of October.

January-Februay:  If you've never heard of The Queen of the Night, Sarastro, or Prince Tamino, ask your 2nd grader.  We started to study Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "The Magic Flute" earlier this month.  The idea of learning about an opera can seem very intimidating to some students; however, the 2nd graders are excited to hear each character sing and laugh at their silliness.  They will also work on vocabulary that is used in and around the theater (Opera, Musical, Play, Ballet, Composer, Libretto, Act, Overture, Intermission, Grand Finale).  At the beginning of February, we will get the chance to watch a very creative production of "The Magic Flute" during music class. Check out the link to the left to hear more about "The Magic Flute".
