Planning Calendar - Junior Year


October
  • Get involved in one or two extra-curricular activities.
  • Review your transcript.
  • Take the PSATs (Mandatory for all Sophomores and Juniors, October 17, 2012).
  • Begin building your college file by using your Naviance account to find schools that meet your criteria.
  • Become familiar with the resources in the guidance library and the Career Center (room 103).
  • Attend the KHS College Fair October 11, 2012 8:20am-9:45am.

November
  • Encourage your parents to attend Junior Night November 13, 2012 6:00pm-8:00pm in the KHS Library.
  • Continue your search for colleges that offer majors in which you are interested.
  • Plan college visits when their classes are in session.
  • Talk with your parents about their considerations (financial, geographical, etc.)

December
  • Review your PSAT scores with your counselor.
  • Use your test, the corrected answers and your responses to help prepare for the SAT.
  • Strive to get your best grades. The better your grades, the more schools will be available to you.
  • Visit www.collegeboard.org on the web to begin studying for the SAT.

January

  • Continue college search.
  • Study hard for those midterms.

February

  • Plan a challenging schedule for your senior year.
  • Begin researching sources of financial aid. You may qualify for aid from organizations with which you or your family is affiliated. Check the Internet.
  • Continue studying for the SAT/ACT.

March

  • Register for the SAT and/or ACT you will take this spring.
  • Meet with your counselor to discuss college choices and course selection for your senior year.
  • Review transcript and test scores to determine how competitive your range of colleges should be.
  • Continue college search using your Naviance or College Board account.
  • Develop a preliminary list of colleges.
  • Start scheduling campus visits when school is in session. (Write thank you notes to interviewers.)

April

  • Prepare for AP Exams. Visit the AP page on College Board.
  • Continue to plan college visits and make appointments.
  • Begin to create your resume--fill out an activities sheet outlining all your accomplishments, involvement, and work experiences, and give a copy to your counselor.
  • Visit to the National College Fair in Hartford.

May

  • Confirm your academic schedule for the fall.
  • Fill out NCAA clearinghouse form if you plan on playing college sports.
  • Take the SAT or ACT.
  • Take AP Exams.

June

  • Ask 3 teachers for letters of recommendation and give each of those teachers a completed "Request for Teacher Letter of Recommendation" form (found in the School Counseling office and on the website).
  • Ask an English teacher for suggested summer reading list.
  • Let your counselor know if you are considering military academics or ROTC.

Summer

  • Make your summer count: take college courses, travel, volunteer or get a job related to your career interests.
  • Saving money now will mean fewer money worries in the fall.
