Instruction
Classroom instruction is the core component of the Killingly Agricultural Education Program. We utilize a myriad of resources and facilities to bring the curriculum to life by using hands-on, real world situations. Our facilities include: food science lab, production greenhouse, animal lab, aquaculture lab, and an ag mechanics lab at Killingly High School. We also are fortunate to have a 25 acre Agricultural Education Land Lab which includes farm and forest land adjacent to the Killingly Intermediate School in Dayville. The Land Lab includes a new barn and storage which houses our tractors, skid steer, and other farm equipment.
Freshman Exploratory Curriculum:
The Freshman year is an exploratory year of instruction including a unit on the FFA (student leadership organization). The FFA Unit is followed by a four unit rotation through classes in animal science, horticulture, agricultural mechanics, and aquaculture/natural resources. The final three weeks of the school year, students are asked to choose the area they would like to major in over the next 3 years. The Freshman year course is weighted as a General level class.
Sophomore/Junior/Senior Year Curriculum:
Students major in one of the areas explored in their freshman year. Classes meet every day during both semesters and are weighted as College Prep level classes. The curriculum is outlined below for each of the content areas.
